OPKO Health Reports Strong Q2 2026 Results, Advances Pipeline
OPKO Health, a global biopharmaceutical company, reported strong financial results for the second quarter of 2026 and made significant progress in advancing its product pipeline. In a recent conference call, the company's leadership provided an overview of its achievements and future plans.
Dr. Philip Frost, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the company's efforts to improve operating efficiency and profitability, as well as advance its product pipeline. He noted that ModeX continues to move forward with five clinical trial programs in oncology, immunology, and vaccines, each with the potential to deliver first- or best-in-class medicines.
"We initiated a phase I-IIa clinical safety and efficacy study in the U.S. of our GLP-1 glucagon candidate," Dr. Frost said. "And we plan to enroll 44 healthy volunteers and presumed MASH patients to assess single-dose tolerability and pharmacokinetics." He also mentioned that OPKO Biologics is making progress with its human growth hormone antagonist, as well as other programs, including GLP-2 for short bowel syndrome and oral PTH for hypoparathyroidism.
Dr. Elias Zerhouni, Vice Chairman and President, noted the company's continued advancements in its pipeline targeting important unmet clinical needs across large markets. He highlighted ModeX's progress with five assets in the clinic and expected a sixth program, an in vivo CAR T asset, to begin first-in-human clinical trials by the end of this year or early 2027.
One of the company's most promising programs is MDX2001, its lead immuno-oncology candidate for solid tumors. This program continues to advance in phase I and is expected to conclude dose escalation and regimen optimization by Q3 or early Q4 2026. Early data from this trial are anticipated to be presented at a medical conference in late 2026 or early 2027.
OPKO's collaboration with Merck for MDX-2201, focused on a vaccine against Epstein-Barr virus and associated cancers, continues to advance. The program is fully funded by Merck and is in the late stages of data analysis of its completed phase I trial. The company expects Merck to have the data to inform the phase II design by the end of this year, with a potential progression to phase II clinical study next year.
The company also reported a strong cash position and solid balance sheet that continue to fund its R&D portfolio at a meaningful level while returning capital to shareholders through an ongoing stock repurchase program. With these achievements, OPKO Health is well-positioned for continued growth and advancement in the biopharmaceutical industry."
