Paychex Delivers Solid Q1 Performance with Double-Digit Growth in Operating Income and Earnings Per Share

Good morning, and welcome to Paychex's first quarter fiscal 2027 earnings call. Participating on the call today are John Gibson and Bob Schrader.

Paychex, a leading provider of human capital management (HCM) solutions, has reported strong financial results for its first quarter of fiscal year 2027. In a conference call held on September 23, 2026, Paychex President and CEO John Gibson highlighted the company's solid start to the new fiscal year, with double-digit growth in operating income and earnings per share.

Total revenue growth of 6% was driven by strong revenue growth in PEO (Professional Employer Organization) and insurance solutions, as well as continued progress against Paychex's strategic objectives. This includes accelerating AI across its business and executing on its go-to-market strategy, with a focus on three key growth drivers: data and AI leadership, go-to-market evolution, and advisory differentiation.

At the heart of Paychex's success is its ability to combine proprietary workforce data, purpose-built HCM platforms, and advisory expertise. The company's AI-powered intelligence engine, WISE, now draws on more than 50 trillion proprietary data points across payroll, HR, benefits, and other workforce workflows. This domain-specific data enables Paychex to deliver actionable AI-driven automation, creating a continuous feedback cycle that improves outcomes and strengthens its solutions over time.

Paychex's commitment to data and AI leadership has been recognized by industry experts, with WISE being named one of HR Tech's top HR products for 2026. The company's approach to combining AI with trusted human expertise is also a key differentiator, as it sees AI enhancing the role of its trusted advisors rather than replacing them.

Paychex has already seen early proof points that this strategy is creating tangible value. This summer, the company piloted Intelligent Pay Cycle to proactively address the top sources of payroll errors. Based on the results from more than 50,000 businesses, WISE helped prevent approximately 90% of those payroll errors. Following its success, Paychex is expanding these capabilities across additional use cases.

This week, Paychex announced WISE Hire, an agentic recruiting solution designed to help SMBs (small and medium-sized businesses) find and hire qualified talent faster. The solution uses AI recruiting agents to source candidates, screen applicants, manage outreach, and schedule interviews, all while keeping employers in control and providing access to human recruiting expertise when needed.

Paychex is also extending WISE into business applications where customers already work, such as Microsoft, making it easier for customers and their employees to access. The company is further accelerating AI across its service model and operations, with more than 2,000 agents and features deployed across the business.
