Petco Roars Ahead: Strong Second Quarter Results Mark Accelerated Progress Across Phase Three Reach for the Sky Strategy

Petco, a leading pet supply retailer, has made significant strides in its phase three Reach for the Sky strategy, according to its Q2 2027 earnings conference call transcript. The company's CEO, Joel Anderson, and CFO, Sabrina Simmons, presented a solid performance with positive comparable store sales (comps) for the second quarter in a row.

The quarter saw sales reach $1.5 billion, while adjusted EBITDA was $122 million, including a net tariff refund of $6.8 million. Notably, Petco voluntarily prepaid an additional $75 million in debt on September 1, demonstrating confidence in its financial outlook and cash generation.

A key highlight of the quarter was the relaunch of Petco Perks, the company's customer membership program. The revamped program made point redemption significantly easier for members, leading to a significant increase in redemptions compared to initial projections. While this had a negative impact on net sales, particularly in services, Anderson noted that the company acted swiftly to deploy post-launch guardrails on redemption velocity.

The success of Petco Perks is expected to serve as a key catalyst for long-term growth, with early personalized offer tests demonstrating promising results. The balance of the year will focus on unlocking the program's most powerful component – personalization and loyalty – which is expected to have a positive impact in 2027.

Petco also made significant strides in its initiatives, including adding newness and innovation, improving digital capabilities, investing in vet hospitals, and connecting services to the center of the store. The company's commitment to newness has been fueled by growth in cat-related consumables, where it saw positive growth.

Anderson highlighted the opportunity for Petco to capture market share in the cat category, driven by the demographic shift towards kitten-owning households surpassing puppy households starting in spring 2026. Recent industry data shows that kitten owners are willing to spend more on their pets, creating a massive opportunity for Petco.

Petco's strong performance in Q2 demonstrates its ability to execute its phase three Reach for the Sky strategy and build momentum towards long-term growth. The company's commitment to innovation, personalization, and customer engagement will likely continue to drive results in the second half of 2027.
