POSCO Holdings Steers Through Turbulent Markets with Strong Q3 Performance
Despite the uncertainties brought about by geopolitical tensions and volatile energy supply chains, POSCO Holdings, a leading steel and energy company, has demonstrated resilience and strength in its third quarter performance. In a recent conference call, the company reported a significant improvement in operating profit, driven largely by its steel business.
According to Kim Seung-Jun, representative of the Finance and IR division at POSCO Holdings, the company registered KRW 19.1 trillion in revenue and KRW 940 billion in operating profits, marking three consecutive terms of enhanced positive performance. The operating profit gain was a staggering 15% over the previous quarter and 48% year-on-year.
The steel business segment led the overall performance gain across the group, with POSCO suffering a short-term spike in raw materials cost but managing to turn around its operating profit to the KRW 400 billion range. The company's strategic efforts to cut costs and boost production and sales volume have paid off, contributing significantly to the improved results.
In contrast, the rechargeable battery materials segment experienced an operating loss this quarter due to lithium prices diving, POSCO Argentina going into regular equipment repairs, and poor winter climate forcing reduced production volume. The company's energy resources sector also faced challenges, but the infrastructure segment showed robust performance, supported by profit gains over the previous quarter.
The Triple-Core strategy, released during the CEO Investor Day in July, aims to drive growth across industrial, strategic, and energy resources. Significant progress has been made on each core, including breaking ground on a new automotive hot-dip galvanized steel sheets plant and transitioning part of POSCO Future M's NCM production facility to LFP.
The company's commitment to innovation is evident in its energy resources sector, where it acquired 100% shares in shale gas assets in the Marcellus province. This move positions POSCO Group to respond flexibly to changing market conditions and expand its growth engine for future growth.
In conclusion, POSCO Holdings' Q3 performance demonstrates the company's ability to navigate turbulent markets and drive growth across various segments. The Triple-Core strategy has shown promising results, and the company's commitment to innovation and cost-cutting efforts will likely continue to propel it forward in the face of uncertainty.
As the global energy industry continues to evolve, POSCO Holdings is poised to play a significant role in shaping its future, driven by its strategic vision and operational prowess.
