Redwood Trust Shatters Records in Q2 2026 with $8 Billion Mortgage Banking Volume and Record-Breaking Securitization Pace
Redwood Trust, Inc. has made history by exceeding $8 billion in mortgage banking volume for the second straight quarter, solidifying its position as a leader in the housing finance industry.
In a call with analysts on July 28, 2026, Redwood's CEO Chris Abate highlighted the company's remarkable achievement, citing over 20 securitizations for the first half of the year and three securitizations priced in a single week – a first in the company's 32-year history. This feat demonstrates Redwood's ability to adapt and thrive in an increasingly challenging market environment.
The housing finance business has faced significant headwinds, including high interest rates, regulation, and low home sales activity. However, Abate emphasized that Redwood is prioritizing key differentiators to drive growth despite these challenges. One such differentiator is the company's commitment to technology, with a focus on building an AI-native housing finance platform.
Redwood's proprietary systems, developed by its own engineers and embedded directly into workflows, enable faster expert reviews, greater consistency, and increased scale. The company's multi-agent AI systems also facilitate quicker answer retrieval and complex task application, resulting in meaningful time savings – over 23,600 hours in the first half of 2026, up more than 50% from the previous quarter.
These technological advancements have already yielded impressive results, with direct expenses decreasing to 64 basis points as a percentage of volume for the first half of 2026 – a 28% improvement from full-year 2025. Furthermore, Redwood has extended its unified technology platform to support HELOCs as a new product offering under Sequoia.
As investors seek to align with long-term winners in this extended rate cycle, Abate emphasized the importance of prioritizing strategic mode and capital turnover to drive growth. With its commitment to innovation and operational efficiency, Redwood Trust is well-positioned to navigate the current market environment and emerge stronger than ever.
