Sonoco Surmounts Global Inflation, Delivers Strong Second Quarter 2026 Results

Global packaging leader Sonoco has reported solid second quarter results that met its expectations and exceeded consensus estimates, despite facing global inflation and logistics challenges. The company's productivity and cost controls helped to offset these pressures, delivering a strong operating performance across both its industrial and consumer segments.

In its industrial segment, Sonoco saw operating profits rise 4% compared to the same quarter last year, with gains of $16 million in productivity more than compensating for price cross headwinds driven by rising costs for freight, chemicals, OCC, and lumber. The company's North American URB mills performed particularly well, with trade tons up 6.4%, boosting mill utilization rates to a record 95%. This increased demand was driven in part by new market development and share gains.

The company's consumer segment also showed resilience, with operating profit rising 22% sequentially from the first quarter, despite being down 5% for the period. Productivity and cost containment initiatives helped to boost results in this sector, with paper can volumes up 9% in EMEA and APAC, and Asia volumes surging by 29%. While global inflationary pressures had a negative impact on operating profit, with costs up $10 million due to higher energy expenses stemming from the Middle East situation, Sonoco has implemented mechanisms to fully offset these costs.

These measures include an April price increase for URB and converted products, which will be fully effective in the third quarter, as well as a July 8th price increase of $60 per ton for URB. The company is also adding necessary surcharges to offset higher diesel costs, while contracted paper can price increases have been implemented globally.

Howard Coker, Sonoco's President and CEO, highlighted the strong operating performance across both segments, saying "Our team delivered solid second quarter results that met our expectations and exceeded consensus estimates."

Looking ahead to the second half of 2026, Sonoco is well-positioned for continued success. With its focus on productivity and cost controls, the company is confident in its ability to navigate a challenging global economic environment.
