TFI International Exceeds Expectations in Q2 2026 Earnings Call

TFI International's second quarter 2026 earnings call revealed stronger than expected quarterly results, surpassing analysts' estimates of CAD 1.50-CAD 1.60 adjusted diluted EPS with a impressive figure of CAD 1.85, marking a 38% year-over-year growth. Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Alain Bédard attributed the success to strategic investments made during the recent slowdown in the industry.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Bédard highlighted that TFI International's balanced and diverse portfolio of operating companies in attractive end markets, combined with a focus on efficiency and related operating principles, has enabled the company to execute its plan effectively and capitalize on resulting opportunities. The strong balance sheet, which improved further during the quarter, also played a significant role in supporting the company's strategic capital allocation and ability to return excess capital to shareholders.

Breaking down the results by segment, TFI International reported impressive growth across all three business segments - Less-Than-Truckload (LTL), Truckload, and Logistics. The LTL segment generated CAD 725 million in revenue before fuel surcharge, a 3% year-over-year increase, with an adjusted operating ratio of 88.5% and operating income up by 17%. In contrast, the truckload segment saw revenue before fuel surcharge rise to CAD 761 million, a 7% growth from the past year, while its operating income surged by 50%, reaching CAD 106 million.

The logistics segment also reported significant gains, with revenue before fuel surcharge increasing by 10% year-over-year to CAD 432 million. Operating income expanded by a full 32% to CAD 50 million, reflecting an improved margin of 11.5%. The company's focus on optimizing business mix and end market exposure has resulted in an attractive blend of flatbed and specialized expertise.

As part of its quarterly report, TFI International also highlighted its impressive free cash flow generation, exceeding CAD 200 million during the second quarter. This demonstrates the company's ability to strategically allocate capital and return excess capital to shareholders whenever possible. The company paid a close-to-CAD 40 million quarterly dividend during the quarter.

Looking ahead, TFI International provided guidance for its third-quarter results, anticipating adjusted EPS of CAD 1.70-CAD 1.80, representing a 50% year-over-year increase at the high end.
