U.S. Bancorp Smashes Q3 Earnings Expectations with Record Revenue and Strong Growth Strategies

U.S. Bancorp, one of the largest banking institutions in the United States, has delivered a stellar performance in its third quarter 2026 earnings, exceeding expectations with record net revenue of approximately $8 billion and diluted earnings per share of $1.34, up around 10% from a year ago.

According to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gunjan Kedia, the company's strong execution against its three strategic priorities has driven this impressive growth. Net revenue grew 8.7% year over year, with disciplined productivity delivering 240 basis points of positive operating leverage.

In payments, U.S. Bancorp's transformation efforts continued to gain traction, with total payments revenue growing 6.5% year over year. The company's fee complex is diversified and deepens client relationships, generating attractive returns and contributing to a more balanced earnings profile. Fees continue to be an important component of the company's revenue mix, accounting for 44% of total revenue again this quarter.

U.S. Bancorp also highlighted its global capital markets business as an attractive growth opportunity across a range of economic scenarios. The recent acquisition of BTIG has contributed $226 million of fee revenue in the third quarter, and the company expects capital markets to grow from 8%-10% or more of total company revenue over the next three to five years.

The company's focus on strengthening net interest income and margin is also yielding positive results. By expanding its consumer and small business franchise, U.S. Bancorp provides a highly attractive source of funding, which in turn helps drive growth in net interest income and margin.

Small business banking is an important priority for the company, with more than 2 million small businesses served through a scaled, interconnected platform that contributes meaningfully to company revenue and provides stable, well-priced deposits. U.S. Bancorp has launched several major initiatives to expand its reach with small businesses, including the onboarding of the Amazon co-brand partnership, expansion of the Business Essentials suite of products, and establishment of new banking teams in expansion markets.

As U.S. Bancorp looks ahead to 2027, it is clear that the company's commitment to growth and innovation will continue to drive its success. With a strong foundation in place and a solid strategy for future growth, investors can be confident in the bank's ability to deliver continued excellence.
