Universal's Q3 2026 Earnings Call: Strong Growth, Solid Underwriting, and Resilience in the Face of Hurricane Isaias
Universal Insurance Holdings' recent conference call provided a glimpse into the company's performance during the third quarter of 2026. The results were nothing short of impressive, with a 32.7% annualized return on common equity and an adjusted diluted earnings per common share of $1.93.
According to Steve Donaghy, Chief Executive Officer, Universal delivered a "very strong" quarter driven by solid underwriting and revenue performance. This achievement was reflected in the company's net loss ratio, which continues to improve, as well as new business trends that remain solid, including an 8% growth in policies in force.
One notable event during the quarter was Hurricane Isaias making landfall near Destin in the western Florida Panhandle. Universal's claims team sprang into action immediately, deploying field adjusters and engaging with policyholders to expedite inspections and payments. Despite the storm's impact, Universal views it as "manageable based on claims activity to date," demonstrating the company's resilience and commitment to its customers.
Under the guidance of Frank Wilcox, Chief Financial Officer, Universal's financial results were also highlighted during the call. Adjusted diluted earnings per common share was $1.93 compared to an adjusted diluted earnings per common share of $1.36 in the prior year quarter, with higher underwriting and net investment income being major contributors.
Core revenue reached $444.3 million, a significant 11.1% increase from the same period last year, driven primarily by higher net premiums earned and net investment income. Direct premiums written saw an uptick of 2.7%, while direct premiums earned rose by 4.2%. The company's multi-state footprint also experienced growth in policies in force.
The net combined ratio improved to 91%, a 5.4-point decrease compared to the prior year quarter, reflecting a lower net loss ratio and higher policy acquisition costs outside of Florida. This improvement is crucial for Universal, as it underscores the company's ability to manage its underwriting risks while also growing its revenue streams.
Frank Wilcox mentioned during the conference call that the company repurchased approximately 174,000 shares at an aggregate cost of $7.4 million, leaving around 1.1 million shares available through their current share repurchase authorization program. Additionally, Universal continued to prioritize shareholder value by declaring a quarterly cash dividend of $0.16 per share.
When asked about the competitive environment and prospects for growth in various markets during the call, Steve Donaghy expressed confidence in Universal's organic growth model across all states it currently serves. This sentiment underscores the company's commitment to long-term sustainability and its ability to navigate complex market dynamics.
