Urban Outfitters Delivers Record-Breaking Q2 Performance with 10% Sales Growth and 9% EPS Increase

Philadelphia-based fashion retailer Urban Outfitters, Inc. (URBN) has announced its second quarter fiscal 2027 financial results, revealing a record-breaking performance across various business segments.

In a conference call held on August 26th, the company's management team led by Co-President and Chief Operating Officer Frank Conforti reported that net sales grew by 10% to $1.7 billion, with operating income increasing by 11% and earnings per share (EPS) rising by 9% to $1.72. This achievement marks the eighth consecutive quarter of record sales and profits for the company.

The retail segment brands delivered positive comparable store sales (comps), while the wholesale and subscription segments registered record second-quarter results. Specifically, Nuuly, the company's subscription rental business, achieved 29% revenue growth driven by an increase in average active subscribers to almost 113,000 compared to Q2 last year.

URBN's gross profit dollars saw an 11% increase, with the gross profit rate improving by four basis points to 37.7%. The company successfully leveraged store occupancy expense and delivery expense benefits through impactful initiatives that enhanced customer service and reduced expenses per package. However, higher initial merchandise costs due to tariff costs, inbound freight fuel surcharges, and slightly higher markdowns at Anthropologie partially offset these gains.

The company's ability to navigate headwinds and deliver an improved gross profit margin rate is a testament to its operational excellence and resilience. With this strong foundation in place, management believes there is potential for incremental margin growth in the second half of the year, as highlighted by Chief Financial Officer Melanie Marein-Efron.

As the company continues to push boundaries in the fashion retail space, URBN's Q2 performance serves as a testament to its enduring brand appeal and operational prowess. With record-breaking sales and profits, the company is well-positioned for continued growth and success in the quarters ahead.
