USA Rare Earth: Anchoring the Non-China Tier in a Growing Market for Critical Minerals

The recent second quarter earnings conference call of USA Rare Earth has highlighted the company's progress and vision for the future. CEO Barbara Humpton emphasized that the company is building the global leader in rare earths, with a focus on supplying these scarce materials responsibly at scale.

Humpton noted that the capability to produce rare earths has been consolidated almost entirely into China for decades, but that this situation is changing as companies increasingly recognize the risks associated with single-source dependency on strategic competitors. The Chinese government's recent export restrictions on Western companies have crystallized these risks and are driving companies to rebuild their supply chains around long-term, reliable, and trustworthy sources.

As a result, a two-tier market for rare earths is emerging, with a China tier and a new non-China tier. Western prices for heavy rare earths used in magnets are significantly higher than those in China, reflecting the tightness of supply in the West. For example, Western prices for dysprosium oxide have risen over 90% in 2026 alone, reaching nearly $2,000 per kilogram.

USA Rare Earth is positioning itself to anchor the non-China tier and become the partner of choice for companies looking for reliable sources of critical minerals. The company has made significant progress in recent quarters, including announcing its intent to acquire Serra Verde, which will give it a scaled operating source of both light and heavy magnetic rare earths outside Asia.

CEO Humpton emphasized that availability is the defining condition of the industry today, and that companies must prioritize reliability and trustworthiness in their supply chains. She noted that USA Rare Earth's integrated value chain offers significant barriers to entry for competitors, as it requires capabilities such as mining, processing, metal-making, and magnet manufacturing.

The company has also announced its investment in Carester, bringing world-class heavy rare earth processing capability and intellectual property into the platform. Additionally, USA Rare Earth has selected Blacksburg, South Carolina, for its second U.S. magnet and metals facility, where ground has already been broken and long lead time equipment ordered.

Overall, USA Rare Earth's progress and vision for the future are driven by a recognition of the changing landscape in the rare earths industry. As companies increasingly prioritize reliability and trustworthiness in their supply chains, USA Rare Earth is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend and become the leader in critical minerals.
