Werner Enterprises Delivers Strong Q3 Results Amidst Macro Shifts and Operational Headwinds
In a testament to its resilience and strategic planning, Werner Enterprises reported strong third-quarter results, defying the challenges of rapid macro shifts and operational headwinds. The company's non-GAAP adjusted diluted EPS saw a significant improvement, reaching $0.16, compared to last year.
Werner Enterprises' business generated 23% year-over-year growth in revenues, hitting $951 million for the quarter. This remarkable performance was driven by the company's successful strategy of restructuring its One-Way network and expanding its Dedicated fleet. The results reflect improved asset productivity, network yield, and structural cost efficiency, with near-doubling of adjusted operating income for the quarter.
Chris Neil, SVP of Pricing and Strategic Planning, emphasized that Werner Enterprises' strategy is delivering results, citing the company's revenue growth and improved operational performance. He highlighted three key messages from their results: their strategy is working, they are still in the early innings of a multi-year upcycle, and near-term costs do not change the trajectory of their business.
Derek Leathers, Chairman and CEO, praised Werner Enterprises' team for their unwavering commitment to safety and service, which enabled the company to continue delivering for its customers. Despite facing sharply rising fuel prices, escalating driver onboarding and retention costs, and elevated reserve development, the company's focus remained on strengthening its core pillars.
The Dedicated business segment stood out with strong demand and solid performance, driven by accelerated driver recruitment and a 52% year-over-year increase in total revenues (excluding fuel surcharges). Revenue per truck per week grew nearly 6%, while customer retention remained exceptionally strong at over 95%. The company's strategic decision to accelerate investments in driver hiring and retention began to show results as its TTS fleet increased from the beginning to the end of the quarter.
Chris Wikoff, Executive Vice President, CFO, and Treasurer, highlighted that Werner Enterprises' focus remains on creating value for shareholders by strengthening the core pillars of their business. He emphasized that the near-term costs do not change the structural strength of their business or the progress they are making.
