WSFS Financial Corporation Surpasses Expectations with Strong Third Quarter Performance

WSFS Financial Corporation's third quarter earnings call revealed a strong performance for the company, demonstrating its resilience and ability to adapt to changing market conditions. The bank reported a core EPS of $1.75, a 25% increase from the same period last year, driven by growth in net interest income and fee revenue.

David Burg, Chief Financial Officer, highlighted the company's robust franchise and diverse business model as key factors contributing to its success. He noted that the bank's core PPNR increased 15%, and core net income rose 14% on a year-over-year basis, resulting in a core EPS growth of 25%. This performance is a testament to the company's ability to navigate various interest rate environments and market conditions.

WSFS' diversified business model continues to pay off, with its wealth and trust segment delivering double-digit year-over-year growth for the eighth consecutive quarter. The segment's fee revenue increased by 30% last quarter, accounting for approximately 60% of the company's total fee revenue. Within this segment, corporate trust and global capital markets saw significant gains, increasing by 45% and 48%, respectively.

The bank's institutional services also experienced growth, with personal trust business growing 22% year-over-year, driven by continued new account growth, while private wealth increased 14% year-over-year due to higher AUM. Cash Connect fees declined year-over-year, largely due to the impact of the 2025 interest rate cuts and lower volumes.

WSFS' lending business also saw significant growth, with gross loans growing 1% linked quarter, or 5% annualized. Excluding the continued runoff of the Spring EQ portfolio, loans grew 2% linked quarter and 7% year-over-year. Commercial lending experienced momentum in C&I, which grew 1% linked quarter and is up 9% year-over-year.

In consumer lending, home lending delivered another strong origination quarter despite the interest rate environment. Residential mortgage and home equity loans were up 6% linked quarter and 24% year-over-year. Client deposits declined 3% linked quarter but were still up slightly on a linked-quarter basis. On a year-over-year basis, average core deposits grew 10%, with non-interest deposits representing 35% of the company's total average deposits.

WSFS' focus on expense discipline is also evident in its financial performance, with core non-interest expenses decreasing 3% linked quarter and being generally flat year-over-year. The efficiency ratio declined to 56.1%, demonstrating the company's commitment to optimizing its operations while continuing to invest in the franchise.

In conclusion, WSFS Financial Corporation's third-quarter earnings demonstrate a strong performance that reflects the company's resilience and adaptability in an evolving market environment. Its diversified business model continues to drive growth across various segments, positioning the bank for continued success in the future.
