First Interstate BancSystem, Inc. Continues to Drive Long-Term Earnings Power and Efficiency in Q2 2026

First Interstate BancSystem, Inc. recently reported its second quarter 2026 earnings results, showcasing a continued commitment to improving the long-term earnings power and efficiency of its franchise.

The company's net interest margin expanded for the ninth consecutive quarter, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to enhance profitability. Deposit costs also declined during the period, further contributing to the bank's improved financial health.

Notably, criticized loans declined meaningfully in Q2 2026, reflecting the bank's focus on maintaining underwriting discipline and prioritizing relationship-driven growth over near-term balance growth. This strategic approach has allowed First Interstate BancSystem to optimize its balance sheet, improve profitability, and enhance return metrics.

"We continued to execute on our operating model efficiencies while investing in relationship-driven growth," said Jim Reuter, Chief Executive Officer of First Interstate BancSystem. "Commercial loan production improved in the second quarter, especially in the Rocky Mountain region."

However, the company experienced elevated payoffs during Q2 2026, primarily driven by credits with limited relationship value, including criticized loans and secondary market activity. This led to a decline in reported loan balances, which was more pronounced than expected.

Despite this, First Interstate BancSystem remains committed to its long-term growth strategy, which includes maintaining underwriting discipline and repurchasing shares to return value to shareholders. The company has purchased approximately 8 million shares since the inception of its share repurchase program, returning $270 million to investors.

The bank also made significant investments in data management and introduced an updated advertising campaign and brand refresh during Q2 2026. These initiatives have contributed to improved digital engagement and client satisfaction metrics.

First Interstate BancSystem's focus on long-term value creation is evident in its decision to maintain a disciplined approach to growth, prioritizing relationship-based expansion over near-term balance growth. The company's commitment to shareholder returns and optimized capital deployment strategies will likely continue to drive its success in the future."
