Flagstar Bank Rides Out Higher Interest Rates with Prudent Credit Approach

Flagstar Bank reported a solid third quarter, despite facing higher interest rates and a competitive deposit environment. According to the company's Q3 2026 earnings conference call transcript, net interest income increased, the net interest margin expanded, and pre-provision net revenue improved compared to the previous quarter.

The bank's Executive Chairman and CEO, Joseph Otting, noted that several variables pressured credit costs during the third quarter, including the effects of higher interest rates, actions related to the New York City rent regulations, and persistent inflationary pressures. However, the company made progress in strengthening its core business and advancing its strategic priorities.

One key highlight from the quarter was the growth of the bank's C&I loan portfolio, which delivered $2 billion of net C&I loan growth, resulting in about $1 billion of net loan portfolio growth during the quarter. The average loan added to this portfolio was approximately $28 million in loan outstanding and was part of roughly 75 relationships.

Another important aspect of the company's strategy is reducing its overall commercial real estate exposure. During the third quarter, CRE par payoffs totaled $1.2 billion, with 35% being rated substandard. The bank also funded approximately $375 million of new high-quality relationship-based CRE loans on commitments of over $700 million.

Flagstar Bank's prudent approach to credit quality is evident in its focus on reducing exposure to lower-quality assets and increasing the share of higher-quality, relationship-based lending. Net charge-offs were down by $25 million compared to the prior quarter, while non-accrual loans remained relatively stable at 49 basis points of average loans.

The bank's guidance has been adjusted to reflect the impact of higher interest rates on credit quality and deposit growth expectations. Despite this, Flagstar Bank remains committed to its strategic objectives and is still on track towards achieving them by diversifying its balance sheet.
