Great Elm Capital Corp Powers Ahead Despite Q3 Setbacks: NAV Decline and NII Disappointment

Despite a disappointing third quarter, Great Elm Capital Corp (GECC) remains committed to its long-term strategy of protecting and growing Net Asset Value (NAV), generating sustainable net investment income, and maintaining a disciplined approach to capital allocation and portfolio management.

During the Q3 2026 conference call, GECC's Chairman and CEO, Jason Reese, acknowledged that the company fell short of expectations, particularly with respect to NAV performance. However, he emphasized that progress is being made on several key initiatives, including strengthening the quality of its credit portfolio, expanding its pipeline of differentiated private investment opportunities, and further optimizing its balance sheet.

Reese highlighted that net investment income was $0.17 per share in Q3, compared to $0.32 per share in the prior quarter. This decline primarily reflected a $2 million dividend from an insurance-related investment in the second quarter that did not recur in the third quarter, as well as the reinstatement of incentive fee accruals following the conclusion of prior fee waivers.

Despite the NAV decline by approximately 7% during the quarter to $7.40 per share, GECC remains focused on generating durable investment income and building a consistent earnings profile through disciplined capital deployment and the continued expansion of its private investment pipeline and specialty finance platform.

Reese emphasized that the company's strong liquidity position provides a foundation for improving earnings performance over time. The CLO JV investment, which currently holds a majority ownership position in three CLOs with exposure to approximately $1.1 billion of first lien loans, remains a core part of GECC's strategy.

According to Reese, the underlying credit quality of its portfolio remains strong, and the company continues to prioritize disciplined underwriting and measured capital deployment, rather than pursuing incremental yield at the expense of credit quality.

In light of these developments, investors may want to keep a close eye on GECC's progress in Q4 and beyond. With its strong pipeline and balance sheet position, there is potential for significant improvement in earnings performance over time.
