James Hardie's Strong Q2 Performance: Outperforming the Market Amid Uncertainty
The housing market continues to face uncertainty, with multiple indicators pointing to softer conditions in new construction and repair and remodel. Despite this, James Hardie has reported a strong second quarter fiscal year 2027, with net sales from continuing operations growing 24%.
In his prepared remarks, Aaron Erter, CEO of James Hardie, highlighted the company's focus on what it can control: material conversion, commercial execution, cost discipline, and continuous improvement through its Hardie Operating System. This approach has driven strong sales performance across each of the company's segments.
James Hardie delivered this growth by staying ahead of the market in both new construction and repair and remodel. The company's siding and trim net sales were up 15% and above the high end of its guidance range, reflecting continued traction from its sales initiatives. Multifamily growth was also strong, driven by share gains in this category and its relative affordability in a challenging environment.
The company's Deck, Rail & Accessories segment reported sales up 51%, in line with expectations, driven by share gains, execution against material conversion opportunities, and the positive impact of distribution changes. The decking market continues to outperform the broader market, and demand remains resilient in the premium end of repair and remodel, where James Hardie is very well positioned.
Australia and New Zealand delivered another strong quarter, with sales up 21%, driven by continued share gains. Product innovation remains a highlight for the company, with the launch of its new Hardie Gravis AAC Panel extending its reach into mixed-material facades. The company has also expanded into outdoor living through its TimberTech by James Hardie Decking.
Despite the uncertainty in the housing market, James Hardie continues to expect to outperform the market in both the second half and for the full year. With a strong track record of executing on its commitments, the company remains confident in its ability to deliver growth and meet its targets.
