Nektar Therapeutics Hits a High Note in Q2 2026: REZPEG Advances to Phase III, Market Opportunity Shines
Nektar Therapeutics, a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing innovative therapies for patients with serious and complex diseases, has announced another significant milestone in its Q2 2026 financial results. The company's President and Chief Executive Officer, Howard Robin, highlighted the initiation of the global ZENITH AD program, a Phase III AD program for rezpegaldesleukin (REZPEG), in moderate to severe atopic dermatitis.
In addition to this achievement, Nektar has finalized the design of a single registrational Phase III study for REZPEG in alopecia areata, which is planned to initiate in early 2027. This development builds on the positive clinical data generated by the company in the first half of this year in patients with atopic dermatitis and alopecia areata.
The registrational study designs for REZPEG reflect input from Nektar's completed regulatory meetings, demonstrating a clear understanding of the therapeutic and commercial potential of the novel Treg agonist mechanism. As Dr. Jonathan Zalevsky, Chief Research and Development Officer at Nektar, explained, REZPEG works fundamentally differently by acting upstream of multiple inflammatory pathways to restore immune balance.
Nektar's commitment to expanding the development of REZPEG beyond its lead indications is also noteworthy. Through TrialNet, the company is evaluating the potential of REZPEG in type 1 diabetes in an ongoing Phase II study, highlighting the versatility and broad applicability of the Treg mechanism. With REZPEG, Nektar aims to address significant unmet needs in various autoimmune conditions.
Markets for atopic dermatitis and alopecia areata present substantial opportunities, with over 15 million people in the U.S. affected by moderate to severe atopic dermatitis, of which fewer than 10% are treated with a systemic therapy. REZPEG's differentiation from existing IL-13-based agents and its long-term maintenance dosing regimen position it as a highly attractive therapeutic option.
Recently completed market research by Nektar reinforces the commercial thesis in atopic dermatitis, citing physician enthusiasm for a novel mechanism of action over overlapping mechanisms of action in the IL-13 class. The REZOLVE-AD data was viewed positively, with notable and differentiating features including EASI-75 and Itch NRS responses, as well as quarterly dosing schedule for maintenance and EASI-100 rates.
