Preferred Bank Reports Strong Third Quarter 2026 Results Despite Challenging Market Conditions
Preferred Bank, a leading financial institution, recently announced its third quarter 2026 results, showcasing a net income of $32.9 million, or $2.73 per share. While the company faced a challenging market environment, with competitive deposit markets and a decrease in loans, Preferred Bank's management remains optimistic about the future.
Chairman and CEO Li Yu highlighted the impact of a $2.1 million recovery of interest income on the quarter's results. Despite this, deposits grew by $77 million, or 1.2% on a linked quarter basis. The company expects the competitive deposit market to continue into next year, with both non-bank institutions and customers investing in Treasuries.
Preferred Bank's loan portfolio also faced challenges, decreasing by $14 million after the company placed a large credit on the for-sale status. However, management expressed hope for solid growth in the fourth quarter, citing a strong pipeline. The net interest income was affected by a reversal of interest income, leading to a net interest margin of 3.49%. Without this adjustment, it would have been 3.60%, demonstrating the company's sensitivity to changes in interest rates.
Resolving nonaccrual loans has proven slower than anticipated, with several credits stuck in court proceedings that will be resolved in the fourth quarter next year. Despite this, Preferred Bank is pleased with its consistent cost control and is actively seeking opportunities to improve non-interest income.
CEO Li Yu expressed enthusiasm for a strong 2027 economy and relatively stable interest rate environment, stating, "With the outlook of a strong 2027 economy and relatively stable interest rate environment, we are looking forward to a good 2027 year."
The conference call also touched on the company's CD maturities, with Chief Financial Officer Edward Czajka noting that Preferred Bank has just under $1 billion in CDs maturing in the fourth quarter. The weighted average roll-off and roll-on rates are expected to be significant, providing opportunities for the company to adapt and grow.
