Southside Bancshares Inc. Surpasses Q3 Expectations with Strong Earnings and Loan Growth
Southside Bancshares Inc., a leading financial institution in Texas, has reported an impressive set of third-quarter results that exceeded market expectations. The company's earnings per share (EPS) stood at $0.93, representing a 1.27% return on average asset and a 16.31% return on average tangible common equity.
The tax equivalent net interest margin, a key metric for banks, also saw significant improvement during the quarter, driven by increased loan and security yields, as well as flat funding costs. This bodes well for the company's future performance, particularly with the recent rate increase in September expected to boost fourth-quarter loan yields.
Southside Bancshares' CEO, Keith Donahoe, highlighted the company's strong new loan production during the quarter, amounting to approximately $400 million. Although this was largely offset by payoffs, resulting in a relatively flat loan balance, the bank remains optimistic about its prospects. This is especially true given its commercial real estate originations may slow due to recent rate increases and expected continued payoffs.
Donahoe also emphasized that while the company's loan growth guidance has been moderated to low-to-mid-single digits for 2026, there are signs of resilience in certain sectors. The CEO pointed out that C&I loans, including owner-occupied real estate loans, increased by approximately 5% during the quarter and now account for 18% of the company's total loan portfolio.
The bank's pipeline, which totals $1.2 billion today, is expected to be a key driver of future growth. With approximately 56% of this pipeline comprising commercial construction loans and commercial lines of credit, Southside Bancshares remains well-positioned to capitalize on opportunities in the Texas market.
Other notable highlights from the quarter include the hiring of a new director of treasury management and the initiation of a second branch construction project. This expansion into the greater Fort Worth area is expected to enhance the bank's presence in the region.
The company's Q3 results were also underscored by its excellent financial performance, with net income increasing by $1.1 million or 4.2% linked quarter, and diluted EPS rising by 3.3%. These figures demonstrate Southside Bancshares' ability to navigate a rapidly changing economic landscape.
As the Texas economy continues to grow at a faster pace than the overall U.S. growth rate, Southside Bancshares Inc. remains well-positioned to capitalize on these opportunities and drive long-term success.
